a life of waiting

in my life waiting has become a running theme
even before i was born my mother waited nine months for my arrival
my father and my mother were desperately waiting for a baby boy
but there i was born with long hair and to their disappointment all girl!

i look back and i remember waiting and even today i wait
i look around me and everyone else is also waiting
acting cool
acting strong
but desperately waiting for whatever it is they wait for

for girls the waiting is doubled
the dating process is all about the wait
we wait for the approach
we wait for the call
we wait for the first move
finally we wait for the proposal
and from then on we keep waiting

in school we waited for our grades
in love we wait for our love to call
we desperately hold on to our phone
the phone becomes our safety net
we keep glancing at it like maniacs
until it rings or beeps or vibrates
we wait all day and we hide it
we try to act strong

some girls take the first move
but the majority wait in line
waiting to be picked like flowers in a garden

even in theatre we wait for the call back after the audition

when your lover is gone you wait for them to return
you wait for the plane to land knowing that your heart and soul are on this plane

couples who want to become bigger families wait for the news of their pregnancy every month

mothers wait nine months to see the faces of their babies in real life
and every month they pray for a certain thing to form and for the baby to be healthy
when the baby arrives we start waiting for them to open their eyes
then we wait for them to start talking
we keep waiting for them to start walking
we wait for them to get into pre school
and then we wait for them to graduate
and when they fall in love,
we wait to see the out come, and pray their hearts do not break
every parent dreams of their children's wedding
and then they wait to see their grand children

women wait through out their youth for other things and their youth fades
and they try to bring it back by all means
men wait until their power diminishes

at the job we wait for the big break
the raise, the recognition or even the vacation

we wait for the gift
we wait for the call

we wait for the decision from the judge

when we are sick we wait for health
when we are very old we wait for death

every day we wait

as a nation we all waited for a goal in the african cup

we often have to wait for a result and many times it is completely out of our hands
if so many things can go right, and so many things can go wrong,
what is the point of waiting?

i realized i hate waiting for things to happen or not to happen
i hate seeing others wait
its frustrating
i want to live my life and not wait again
so help me God

Even in death we wait for the place we will reach
will it be heaven?
will it be hell?
will we finally meet God?
will we understand the point of it all?

I do not want to be a waiter any more
i do not want to live a life of waiting

life slips through between long periods of waiting, but I can not help it that I wait, that I hurt, and that I love.
