down town cairo through their eyes

have you been to talaat harb street lately?
have you seen the masses and how they have become?
have you noticed how much old cairo changed?

we took two honeymooners who came all the way from L.A
a place so different than Cairo

they decided egypt is their destination paradise
i thought it was like us going to thailand
i figured bangkok is Cairo
Chang Mai is Luxor
Chang Rai is Aswan

they found the circus in our streets charming
they found the masses exciting
they found it wild
they looked at things with wide open eyes
watching the beautiful Amercian bride amazed at the sights
of Cairo fiasco was more interesting than seeing anything else for me

Some people come all the way here to experience the haphazard life
they come all the way to smell the stink
to see the mess
to see life on the other side
after 9/11
the middle east has become this mysterious gem
the bravest of people are those who come

those who leave the neat clean life
and choose to taste our dusty bitter sweet rugged life

the hotel is called talisman
it is beautiful
on the fifth floor
in downtown
so beautiful
so colorful
so authentic
and only one floor
up in the old building
built by the europeans
back in the time when cairo was paris by the nile
it smells like cats in the building
that old and rusty building is beautiful too
is enchanting
it tells so many stories

i saw cairo today from their eyes
it is crazy and fun
like nothing seen before
the shops in down town are a sight not to be missed
the shoes everywhere
the manikins veiled
the men in bleached jeans
the world in talaat harb street in downtown Cairo
is the opposite of the world in zamalek
or at the four seasons giza or garden city

walking around cairo u can not help but feel small
you feel the smallness of your life
you feel the temporary nature of it
you feel like a transit traveller
you think your problems are small
compared to the masses
,the walking people of Egypt
you feel lucky

take a walk in down town Cairo
on a thursday night
you will feel tiny
you feel blessed
and protected in your life
your normal life is heavenly compared to theirs
your life is small
you are small

i am small
i am tiny
they are the masses
who a I?

the Egyptians have been there since the beginning of time
i have ancient egyptian blood in me
i know it!
but who am i?
i'm just another egyptian
from the 80 million

down town cairo puts everything into perspective
last night i saw cairo through their eyes
